Robitussin 12-Hour Cough Relief

Thanks to CrowdTap, I was able to get a free sample of this product.

Now, CrowdTap has very short turn-around times on their missions, so I can't really talk about the effectiveness of the product. The active ingredient is an extended-release dextromethorphan. But this mission was mainly focused on the flavor. It comes in grape and orange, but the store where I got it only had orange. In short, the flavor is awful. There is very little orange-ness to it. It is thick and gritty and just tastes like nasty medicine. This product is going to have to work significantly better than the short-acting version for me to consider buying it in the future.

Kashi Overnight Muesli

I was so excited to try this as I have enjoyed most Kashi products I have had in the past, but I was very disappointed in it.

I tried the cherry-almond flavor, using 2% milk. After sitting in the refrigerator for almost 10 hours, I found the kashi to still be very runny and the grains to still be far too chewy. So I stuck it in the microwave. And let me just say that the amount of time they say is not nearly enough to warm it. I think I ended up doing it three times longer. At that point, it was warm, and the grains had softened a tiny bit more. And at this point I could at least eat it. The flavor was overwhelmingly cinnamon. Cinnamon, cinnamon, and more cinnamon. You could barely taste the grains, almonds, or cherries over the cinnamon. And there were very few cherries or almonds. (And I just went and looked at the Kashi website. There was cardamon in there? Really? I love cardamon. Did not taste a bit of it. And my finished product looked nothing like their picture.)

Now the cost. Wow. $2.49 for one serving. Even for it being organic, that is outrageous. There was barely 1/3 cup of stuff in the container (yes, I measured it before I added milk), most of that whole oats. You can get organic rolled oats for well under $2/pound. So I'm guessing I could make this mix myself for no more than $.50/serving. And that's with me buying ingredients retail. That's quite a markup. Overall, I see this product as yet another in a long line of "I've got money to burn and I'm too busy to do things myself and I don't care about the extra packaging that I'm just going to throw away" products that are all the rage these days.

It's a shame, Kashi. I've lost respect for you with just this one product. #freesample #houseparty #chatterbox
